Learning to parallel park is a notorious milestone when learning to drive, some people can find this hard to begin with, but don't worry, with the correct training and a bit of confidence you will be able to get the hang of it in no time.

While it can be a difficult feat, and when you come across it on your course its possible you might struggle to begin with, if you get a headstart it will make life easier for you.

If you get thinking about it now , you're likely to find it makes more sense! Here's some helpful tips that you should remember when parallel parking, pretty soon it will be second nature. Preparation is key!

Things that can help:

  • Try practising with cones or large boxes, this can perfect your technique without risking a nasty bump on your car.

  • If your not happy with your approach, pull out and start again, there's no point forcing it, you need to be able to do this confidently.

  • When parking, leave the cat infront of you to get out of the spot, this is something you will experience yourself as a driver, you park up, leave your car, come back to it later only to find that someone else has parked next to you and your spot has shrunk. Do not be this person!

  • Always look back to check for traffic.

  • Your foot should always be on or near the break pedal, you do not need the accelerator.

  • Try finding a space which is about six foot longer than your car.

  • Flash your break light signal before you move in.

  • Take it slow and ease nicely into the spot
